The March doldrums

Friday Update:

We have a very weak system brushing the far north today.  Areas from about Provo northward could see a chance for a shower or two this afternoon with snow levels relatively high.  No real accumulation likely.  We then clear out and warm up again this weekend into next week.

GFS model portraying a system trying to work its way into Utah for Thursday-Friday of next week.  In the Euro, this system fizzles out and stays mostly to our north.  Euro has been winning these battles lately.  So until we get some more concrete model consensus, it looks like we’ll remain fairly quiet.

Quiet weather for the most part.  A chance for a few light snow showers in the mountains on Friday in far northern Utah.  Warm and spring-like this weekend into next week.

The storm track is to our north now — leaving Utah high and dry for the most part.  A system will drop far enough south on Friday to brush far northern Utah.  This will bring clouds and breezes and a chance for a few showers.  We’ll dry out again for the weekend.  Temps will remain warm and trend warmer into next week.  High temps pushing 70 in the valleys and 50+ in the mountains.

Long Range:

Winter weather certainly isn’t over yet and we will return to colder and snowy conditions, the question now is when?  Models have the ridge weakening around or just after mid-month.  This is when we could start to see energy work its way into the area.  Confidence, however, is low as models are not in good agreement on if or when this will happen.  Until then, spring skiing will be great.  Bust out the sunscreen and explore some parts of the mountains you’ve never been to.  Or, do what I’m doing and get a first taste of warm weather recreation. Powder will be back eventually.

P.S.  Big thanks again to our site sponsor Whisper Ridge Cat and Heli Ski.  The pics on their instagram feed this season have been fun to follow as their new yurt village is absolutely buried.  If you’d like to try something new, check out what they’ve got to offer with discounted Spring rates.

How does everyone ski the mountains here in the spring? My first season in PC so I’m wondering what parts of PCMR/Canyons to hit in the morning, midday, afternoon.

Well, most of the time we ski the mountain with skis in the morning, at midday we get babes, and in the afternoon we hit the park at snowbird.

I had a pass to canyons for about 10 years. Mornings are best chasing the sun, as you will want to see any icy areas. Do some laps on tombstone focusing on the northern side then as the day warms up branch out across that expansive resort.
