Inverted

Summary:

High pressure is taking control.  Cold temps today will warm this weekend as the valleys become inverted with increasing fog and haze.  Next chance for snow will be late next week.

Details:

Instability snow showers did continue through much of the day yesterday.  Saw a few inches in some places to increase our storm cycle totals just a bit:

Snowfall 20-Jan 21-Jan 22-Jan 23-Jan 24-Jan 25-Jan 26-Jan 27-Jan Totals
Alta 5 14 17 7 26 6 10 4 89
Brighton 4 17 10 13 30 6 2 0 82
Snowbird 4 16 16 7 25 4 7 2 81
Snowbasin 3 6 10 13 20 16 3 5 76
Solitude 3 12 8 9 25 1 5 2 65
Powder Mtn 4 3 8 15 17 8 7 3 65
Park City 2 8 6 11 20 4 2 2 55
Deer Valley 2 13 4 12 18 3 0 3 55
Brian Head 13 14 6 3 12 2 0 0 50
Sundance 4 7 4 4 18 1 2 1 41
Eagle Point 12 7 6 2 5 2 1 1 36
Beaver Mtn 1 0 5 8 17 1 1 0 33

All clear this morning as Mt. Superior is caked in fresh snow:

It will be chilly today, but will start to warm up as high pressure takes control.  By later this weekend, temps on the mountain will feel almost springlike.  A good weekend perhaps to get out of inverted conditions in the valley and have a ski day and bbq up in the mountains.  That’s my plan at least.

Long Range:

High pressure stays in control for early next week.  Trough of low pressure approaches the west coast by middle of next week.  We could see chances for snow returning between February 2-4, late next week into next weekend.  Still a lot of uncertainty surrounding how strong this storm will be.  Will continue to keep an eye on things.

Thanks Evan! Regarding the inversion – will we be dealing with increasing smog until that next trough comes in? Or are we late enough into the season yet where we might clear out due to sun heating, sooner than that? I know it is still January, so I doubt the sun angle is there yet, but one can wish…

Me and a few buddies are flying into SLC on the 4th and staying until the 12th. We’re splitting time in UT (Brighton & Solitude) and WY (Targhee & Jackson). I’ve been following you for years now and I’d love to hear any recommendations you might have on when you think we should be in UT vs. WY & vice-versa. I fricken can’t wait.

Mark, I think it qualifies under no bad choices. I would wait a few more days and see how Evans forecast for next weekend shakes out.
